According to the plot of the book, Foma Hryhorovych tells the story of how his grandfather was sent with a letter to the tsarina. On the way, the grandfather met a Zaporizhian, and he confessed to him that he had sold his soul to the devil and that very night he would have to pay. Grandfather decides to help him and chats all night, but sleep overcomes him and he falls asleep. When the grandfather wakes up, he realizes that his plan has failed and, moreover, not only the Zaporozhian, but also the horses and his hat, where he put the deed for the queen, have disappeared. Not knowing what to do, the grandfather goes to a tavern, where he is advised how to find the devil and ask for his certificate back. Thus begins the grandfather's journey for his literacy, as a result of which he goes to hell, where he meets witches, devils and other monsters.
Mykola Gogol's novel was first published in 1831 and since then has been republished several times accompanying the main novel of the cycle "Evenings on a farm near Dykanka". This edition is illustrated with atmospheric drawings by the Kyiv artist Andrii Poturailo, who very accurately conveyed the spirit of this short story.
