The film is based on JK Rowling's novel "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, 1997). J.K. Rowling sold the film rights to the first four parts of Harry Potter in 1999 for a modest sum of one million pounds (a little over $1.5 million at the time). More importantly, it was stipulated that the writer would receive a certain share of the fees of each of the films, and would have considerable control over all stages of the production of the pictures.
